What Makes a Pharmacy Ideal for Hospice Care? Key Features to Look For.

The Features That Actually Matter

What to Ask During a Site Visit or Reference Call

A pharmacy's own description of its hospice readiness is a starting point, not proof. A short list of direct questions during a visit or reference call gets past the marketing language.

  • Ask to see the actual comfort-care inventory on the shelf, not just a list of what's theoretically available to order.

  • Ask a current hospice client how long an after-hours request actually took the last time it happened.
  • Ask how the pharmacy handles a substitution when an exact medication isn't in stock, and how that decision gets communicated back to the nurse.
  • Ask whether the same pharmacist or team stays consistent over time, or whether hospice-specific knowledge has to be re-explained with turnover.

Why Alignment of Incentives Matters

Hospice leaders should understand how medication and delivery pricing works and whether the model keeps incentives aligned. BetterRX uses transparent, pass-through pricing and does not mark up medication or delivery costs. That pricing approach works alongside our Custom Tailored Pharmacy Alliance, which we tailor to each hospice’s geography, patient needs, and fulfillment requirements, helping hospices maintain visibility and control over pharmacy spend.

BetterRX’s Custom Tailored Pharmacy Alliance is built around these features: hospice-focused medication access based on real prescribing patterns, 24/7 access for urgent needs, pharmacy teams trained in comfort-care and symptom management, and nationwide coverage with strong local access.

A Pharmacy Success Manager actively manages these relationships on the hospice’s behalf, helping address inventory availability, local coverage, and recurring pharmacy issues.

Independent pharmacy partners bear this out directly: in a 2024 Qualtrics survey of more than 100 independent pharmacies, 96% said they prefer BetterRX to traditional hospice PBMs, and 94% said BetterRX speeds order fulfillment. The same survey found that 86% of hospices experience reduced service failures with BetterRX.

What This Means for Patients and Families

Every one of these features ultimately serves the same goal: making sure a patient in pain, or a family watching a loved one struggle with a symptom, doesn't have to wait longer than necessary for relief because the pharmacy wasn't actually built for this kind of care. That's the practical difference between a pharmacy that happens to deliver to hospice patients and one that's genuinely built for hospice.

What this looks like in practice: On an ordinary weeknight, is a nurse responding to a symptom change with a pharmacy that can quickly confirm medication availability and fulfill the order through a reliable local process? That difference is easy to overlook when everything goes right and unmistakable when it doesn't.
